I feel like I don't have a voice . .

Full disclosure - I am not a politician.  I’ve learned more about politics in the last 10 months than I have in a lifetime.

Tonight, our Governor held Indiana’s State of the State address.  Needless to say, he was not very welcoming nor understanding about the needs of the people of Indiana. He was very clear in his intention to further divide political parties, demonize people of faith to others, and attempt to speak on behalf of me and other Hoosiers that discrimination does not happen in Indiana.

It does.  It happens everywhere.

Listening to him go the extra mile to affirm that he does not have any interest in supporting all Hoosiers makes me feel less than.  Like all of the work I have done means nothing.  Like all of the voices of the THOUSANDS OF INDIANA BUSINESSES are not important to truly consider a better position.

I don’t understand.  I sit here and wonder why I spend every single evening working on something that our Governor sees every day.  He literally cannot go anywhere downtown without seeing an Open For Service sticker.  In fact, he can’t even go into our Government Center without seeing the sticker.

I feel like I am not worth protecting.  I feel like he would rather see me leave this state than to do what he knows is the right thing to do.

But I won’t.  Why?  Because there is more work to be done.  I need to step up and figure out how to protect my fellow Hoosiers while our Governor goes out of his way to leave people wide open to being fired, kicked out of housing and businesses, and deny our businesses to recruit top talent to Indiana.

I have to prove him, yet again, wrong.  As I sit typing this, I see more businesses registering for Open For Service.  I may feel like I don’t have a voice, but starting Open For Service, joining our friends at Freedom Indiana, Indiana Competes, and Indy Chamber makes me have a voice.

If you live in Indiana – you DO have a voice.  We need volunteers, we need support, we need you to support businesses with an Open For Service sticker on their door or on their website . . we need you and I PROMISE to make you have a voice.  You are important to the OVERWHELMING MAJORITY of Indiana residents.

If you live outside of our state, Indiana is FULL of people – from all backgrounds and walks of life.  Tens of thousands of people have taken a stand to show that they care about fellow Hoosiers.

So do not go to bed tonight thinking about leaving our state, or boycotting us, or believing in the stereotype that Indiana does not welcome all.  Indiana is Open For Service, and I will prove it.

For volunteer, sponsorship, and donation questions – please email info@openforservice.org.  Open For Service is a registered 501c3 non-profit focusing on protecting all people and supporting businesses that will not turn someone away based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, political affiliation, and religious beliefs.
